Ikkajo application
Ikkajo is regularly the first technique taught to new students. Often translated as “first control” I think of it as first option, as it is relatively simple and offers a good non lethal option in self defence. The key to successful application is changing ones mindset from defensive to proactive. The formal stance of kamae as taught in Yoshinkan Aikido is important, but we should recognise that this is a “training stance”. Standing in kamae ready for the attack is simply flagging to your attacker what your response will be and limits your capacity to take the initiative back. Have a look at the video link below, filmed in a regular training session.
